Material and Properties • Base material: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) rubber (commonly EPDM terpolymer with a small diene content for vulcanization). • Chemical resistance: Excellent resistance to hot water, steam, oxygenated and non-oxygenated solvents, many acids and alkalis (good against dilute acids, alkalis, and oxidizing agents). Poor resistance to hydrocarbons, aromatic solvents, and ketones. • Temperature range: Usable roughly from −40°C to +120°C (short-term up to ~150°C depending on compound). • Weather and ozone resistance: Outstanding resistance to ozone, UV, and weathering. • Mechanical properties: Good elasticity, resilience, compression set resistance, tensile strength and elongation depend on compound formulation and reinforcement. • Thermal aging: Good retention of properties under thermal aging compared with many other elastomers. • Permeability: Relatively low gas permeability vs. some soft rubbers; depends on thickness and compound. • Food/contact safety: Can be formulated to meet certain food-grade or drinking-water contact standards (requires appropriate additive selection and certification).
Key Features of EPDM Filter-Press Membranes • Flexible, resilient sheet suitable for squeezing/filtering cake release in plate-and-frame or recessed filter presses. • Good sealing and compressibility for tight closure between filter plates. • Chemical and temperature tolerance for many filtration slurries (acidic/alkaline environments and hot filtration). • Durable against ozone, UV, and aging—long service life in outdoor or cyclic operations. • Can be produced as smooth, textured, or molded profiles, and with varied thicknesses and durometers to match press designs. • Can be bonded to fabric or support layers for reinforcement and improved mechanical wear resistance. • Easy to vulcanize, mold, and repair (patchable in many cases).
Advantages • Broad chemical compatibility: Suitable for diverse process streams (except many organic solvents/hydrocarbons). • Temperature robustness: Works well across a wide temperature window, enabling hot filtrations. • Long service life: Excellent aging, ozone and weather resistance reduce replacement frequency. • Good mechanical performance: High elasticity and tear resistance accommodate repeated compression and cake discharge. • Cost-effective: Competitive material cost and lower lifecycle cost due to durability. Effectively ruduce the cost of replacing MEURA 2001 original EPDM diaphragm. • Customizability: Formulation, hardness, thickness, texture and reinforcement can be tailored to application needs. • Food/Pharma suitability: Can be formulated and certified for sanitary applications where required.
Limitations / Considerations • Not suitable for prolonged exposure to strong hydrocarbons, aromatic solvents, oils, gasoline, or ketones—select alternative elastomers if exposure expected. • Compatibility testing recommended for specific process chemicals, temperatures, and cleaning agents (e.g., strong solvents, caustic at high temperature, oxidizers). • Mechanical design: Membrane thickness, hardness, and support must be selected to avoid excessive deflection, improper cake release, or accelerated wear. • Certification: For food, pharma, or potable-water use, ensure the compound and manufacturing meet regulatory standards (FDA, EU, NSF, etc.).
Typical Industry Applications • Mining and mineral processing: Dewatering concentrates, tailings filtration, slurry separation. • Chemical industry: Filtration of acidic or alkaline slurries, catalytic fines, pigment and pigment pastes. • Food and beverage: Filtration of food-processing suspensions (with food-grade compounds and certifications). • Pharmaceuticals and biotech: Solid-liquid separation in non-aggressive solvent processes (with sanitary formulation and validation). • Wastewater treatment: Sludge dewatering, municipal and industrial effluent treatment. • Metal finishing and electroplating: Removal of metal hydroxides, sludges from plating baths (if compatible with bath chemistries). • Ceramics and cement: Clay, kaolin, and ceramic slip dewatering. • Oil & gas (selected uses): Filtration in aqueous systems not containing hydrocarbons. • Paper & pulp: Recovery of fines, starch, or coating pigments in aqueous systems. • Direct Replacement EPDM Diaphragm for MEURA 2001 Filter Press.Fully Compatible Diaphragm for MEURA 2001 Filter Press
Selection and Maintenance Tips • Confirm chemical compatibility with the actual process fluid and cleaning agents. • Choose appropriate hardness and thickness for plate type and required cake release performance—softer membranes may give better seal and release but wear faster. • Consider reinforced or fabric-backed membranes for high mechanical abrasion or high differential pressure. • Regular inspection for wear, cracking, or chemical attack; schedule replacement to avoid process downtime. • Use compatible adhesives and repair compounds when patching; follow manufacturer curing recommendations.
